Jesus: Son of God, Son of Man, Son of David

Jesus is the Son of God. That is what he said of himself in the Gospel of John [5:25; 9:39; 10:36; 11:4; 19:7].

He called himself the Son of Man [Adam] in all four gospels and fulfilled God’s promise to Adam [Genesis 3:15].

Others called him the Son of David, because he was literally a descendant of David and fulfilled God’s promise to David as the Messiah [II Samuel 7:13; I Chronicles 22:10].

This study allows you to go to the New Testament scriptures and see who Jesus really is: based on what he said of himself. It also shows what other people believed about him. I encourage you to look at each scripture, then go to your Bible and see the context of each verse below. It will open your eyes to the greatness of the Father’s love in sending His only Son to show us how to live.

Son of God

The following chart shows those who called Jesus the “Son of God.” The Devil [the tempter] tried to get Jesus to question who he was by saying “if” he was God’s Son. Evil spirits recognized him as the Messiah. His own disciples believed what he said of himself. Unbelievers questioned or considered his claim to be God’s Son. The Gospel of John shows Jesus as God’s Son. That is where he calls himself God’s Son five times–and where religious leaders consider it blasphemy for him to be the Messiah, God’s Son. An angel tells of his coming birth as God’s Son. Holy men of God who wrote what God inspired [II Peter 1:20,21; 3:15,16] said Jesus is the Son of God: Mark, Paul, and John.

Son of Man [Adam]

The following chart shows those who called Jesus the “Son of Man.” In the Gospels, Jesus is the only one who refers to himself with this Old Testament title for the Messiah. In John 12:34, the people twice ask Jesus what he meant in using this title. Before his death, Stephen had a vision of Jesus standing at God’s right hand as the risen Messiah–the Son of Man. Revelation twice speaks of one “like” the Son of Man.

Son of David

The following chart shows those who called Jesus the “Son of David.” These included many people who came to Jesus for healing. They wanted to receive the promised mercies of David.

His adopted father, Joseph of Nazareth, is mentioned twice, and was a son of David through Nathan. Mary, Jesus’ physical mother, was of the line of David through Solomon. Matthew 1:16 has a mistranslation: “And Jacob begat Joseph the husband [Aramaic indicates “father”] of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.” Mary’s father was named Joseph. Matthew 1:7 says that Mary’s father was of the direct line of David through Solomon. Romans 1:3 clarifies how Jesus was of David’s seed according to the flesh [Mary contributed the “flesh,” the egg as Jesus’ mother]. Yet Jesus was conceived by God, the Holy Spirit [Luke 1:35].

Thank you for this wonderful catalog of Truth! Scripture speaks for itself and there is no need for us to twist it, read into it or pretend it doesn’t mean exactly what it says!!! This is a valuable resource to keep on hand.
