Background
Jesus Christ would have found great comfort in this Psalm. Despite the vanity of men, the Messiah could trust in the words of the Lord, for they are pure as refined silver. The Lord will preserve His Word and those who believe it.
Structure
(Verse 1) Request for the Lord to help the Messiah
(Verses 2-4) Attacks of the vain and proud
(Verses 5-7) The Lord helps the Messiah
(Verse 8) Attacks of the wicked and vile
Key Scriptures
Verse 3—“the tongue that speaketh proud things.” This is quoted in James 3:5, where the tongue is “an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” The adversary has his men and women speak his deadly words. The wicked speak with flattering lips and a double heart. But the Lord sends His Messiah to speak words of life.
Verse 6—“ The words of the Lord are pure words.” These words are purified on the earth when people speak the truth in love. Jesus Christ said that God’s Word is truth, and it sanctifies those who believe it (John 17:17).
Verse 7—“ Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.” Jesus Christ believed this promise in his darkest days on earth. He knew that His Father would always be faithful to His Word.
