Background

This Psalm speaks of “His Anointed” (verse 6) and “the king” (verse 9). Jesus Christ is the central theme, for he is the Messiah and King who fulfilled the law.

Structure

(Verses 1-5) The Lord hears and fulfills the prayer for a savior

(Verse 6) The Messiah saves with the strength of God’s right hand

(Verses 7-8) The Lord hears and fulfills the prayer for a savior

(Verse 9) The Messiah hears and saves

Key Scriptures

Verse 6—“the Lord saveth [yasha] his anointed [Messiah]…with the saving [yesha] strength of his right hand.” The Lord’s salvation is through the Messiah. The name “Jesus” is from Je-hoshua, meaning “the Lord saves.” This is from the same Hebrew root as yasha and yesha.
