God’s Word to Mankind

What is God’s “word” or communication to mankind? Where is it found? The answer is simple: in the great celestial dome above us, in the written words of those who spoke for God on earth, and in the one sinless person who walked among us.

Hebrews 1:1,2:
God, who at sundry times [polumeros, many portions] and in divers manners [polutropos, many manners] spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.

This is the only place in the Greek New Testament where either of the words polumeros or polutropos is used. It is deeply significant. God has spoken in many different “portions,” or degrees. And God has spoken in many different “manners,” or arrangements. What were these degrees and arrangements of His speaking? The answers lie right within these two verses.

God, in His foreknowledge of all things, knew that man would need a redeemer. Even before Adam fell, God “in times past” had the story of this redeemer written in the stars above. Adam and his descendants learned of the “promised seed,” the Branch that was to come, the Messiah, and his victorious life as declared in the stars. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge” (Psalms 19:1,2).

And God spoke “unto the fathers by the prophets,” in what they said and wrote. Abraham was called a prophet. David was called a prophet. God promised Adam that He would send a “seed” to redeem mankind (Genesis 3:15). God promised Abraham that in his “seed” all nations would be blessed (Genesis 26:4). God promised that David’s “son” would be on the throne forever (I Chronicles 22:10). The Messiah is the great subject of the scriptures.

Finally, God has “in these last days spoken unto us by his Son.” Jesus Christ was God’s Word made flesh, and he dwelt among us (John 1:14). As God’s only begotten Son, he showed the Father’s glory. Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah, was “full of grace and truth.” Anyone who saw Jesus, saw his Father. He was all that God could speak to mankind in a living, breathing human.

God’s Word: Celestial

God spoke celestial bodies into being for a number of reasons.

Genesis 1:14:
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.

The sun, moon, planets, and stars all have important functions. They divide day and night. They are for “signs,” which in Hebrew means “a mark of something important to come.” They are also for “seasons,” which in Hebrew means a “fixed or appointed time.”

Celestial bodies are amazingly accurate “clocks” that keep track of days, months, years, and eons. They also describe the “times” of God and the significant events that He promises. The coming of the Messiah and his great work are the most significant events of all time.

Psalms 147:4:
He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.

God named the stars and “spoke” through them–specifically in the constellations. The zodiac shows 12 major aspects and times in relation to the Messiah. Each of these 12 signs has 3 associated constellations to add depth to its story.

Psalm 19 is divided into three sections. The first records God’s Word in the heavens. The second records God’s Word written by his prophets. The third records God’s living Word, His servant, the Messiah. Let’s look at the first part.

Psalms 19:1-6:
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.
Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.
His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

Verse 3 in Hebrew reads: “No speech nor language, their voice is not heard.” The stars do not utter a sound, but their pictures tell the greatest story of all time.

Verse 4 says the stars have “words” that are visible to the end of the world. And these words are a “tabernacle” (tent, dwelling) for the sun. What group of stars does the sun pass through and dwell in? The twelve constellations called the zodiac. This word means “living way.” Who is the true and living way? The Messiah, Jesus Christ (John 14:6). The zodiac tells of the coming redeemer.

lion of judahBut where does the story begin? The twelve signs form a circle in the heavens. The ancient sphinx gives the key. This comes from the Greek word meaning to “join” together. What is joined together? The celestial story that God spoke. The sphinx has the head of a woman (Virgo) and the tail of a lion (Leo). The head or beginning of the story is Virgo, the tail or end of the story is Leo. This is the heavenly story of the redeemer, conceived of a woman (Luke 1:31) and called the “the Lion of the tribe of Judah” (Revelation 5:5).

We will see that the original names God gave the stars and constellations, especially the zodiac, tell of the Messiah. This is how God spoke in many degrees by many arrangements.

God’s Word: Written

We know from the book of Hebrews that God “spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets.” These were holy men of God who spoke as they were moved by God, the Holy Spirit. They wrote what He wanted them to write.

II Peter 1:20,21:
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

See We Can Trust God’s Word, Part 1; We Can Trust God’s Word, Part 2; and Jesus Christ, the Subject of God’s Word for further details.

Let’s go back to Psalm 19 to see the next section, which records God’s written Word.

Psalms 19:7-10:
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

david scrollGod’s written Word is perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, and true. It converts the soul, makes wise the simple (humble), rejoices the heart, enlightens the eyes, endures forever, and is righteous altogether (in every way). It is God speaking, and it tells of God’s great plan of salvation through the Messiah, Jesus Christ. That is why it is more to be desired than the finest gold. The story of the Messiah is sweeter than honey from the comb. Let’s see how God promised to send His Son, as recorded in the scriptures.

After Adam and Eve fell, God immediately promised to send the redeemer. He told the serpent that a champion would come who would bruise his head.

Genesis 3:15:
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Since a woman physically has no “seed,” this promise would need to be a miracle. A woman would someday believe to have God’s Son without having sexual relations. This came to pass in the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. Mary was of the lineage of David and Abraham. Abraham had been promised that the Messiah would be in his family line.

Genesis 26:4:
And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.

This promised seed would be like the “stars of heaven.” Abraham’s offspring would be of great number, and Abraham’s “seed,” the Messiah (Galatians 3:16), would be as the stars in heaven proclaimed him to be. In the Messiah, all nations of the earth have been blessed.

David was a descendant of Abraham, and a great king. God told David that the Messiah would be His “son,” and would be on the throne of God’s kingdom forever.

I Chronicles 22:10:
He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.

God’s Word: Living

Jesus Christ was God’s Word made flesh. He came to fulfill the Word of God. All of the Old Testament writings spoke of him. He is the mediator between God and man.

John 1:14:
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Matthew 5:17:
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Luke 24:44:
And he [Jesus] said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

I Timothy 2:5:
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

Let’s look at the third section of Psalm 19 to see what it says about God’s servant, the Messiah.

Psalms 19:12-14:
Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.
Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.

David’s prayer was to serve God in a sinless manner and to be upright and innocent. He wanted the words of his mouth and the inner thoughts of his heart to be pleasing to God. This prayer was answered in the “son of David,” Jesus Christ. The Messiah was born with innocent blood, and he lived a life without ever sinning.
