Background

Psalm 96 is the seventh in the Numbers Book of the Psalms, which goes to Psalm 106. God’s rest is a major theme of these 17 Psalms, and in this specific Psalm, God’s people are called to sing a new song. That new song is found in the next Psalm (97).

Structure

(Verses 1-3) Sing unto the Lord for His salvation and declare his glory

(Verses 4-6) God, Who made the heavens, is to respected above all “gods”

(Verses 7-10) Worship, glorify, and speak of the Lord

(Verses 11-13) God, Who judges His people with truth, will judge the earth

Key Scriptures

Verse 13—”Before the Lord: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.” This will be true of Jesus Christ “coming” to judge in the future. Acts 17:31: “Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man [Jesus Christ] whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.” God has committed future judgment to His Son, Jesus Christ. Acts 10:42: “And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he [Jesus Christ] which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick [living] and dead.” John 5:27: “And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.”
