Click here to read PSALM 97 in poetic form.

Background

Psalm 97 is the eighth in the Numbers Book of the Psalms, which goes to Psalm 106. God’s rest is a major theme of these 17 Psalms, and in this specific Psalm, God gives His people a new song to sing.

Structure

(Verses 1, 2) Rejoicing at God’s power, righteousness, and judgment

(Verses 3-8) Rejoicing at God’s power, righteousness, and judgment

(Verses 9-12) Rejoicing at God’s power, righteousness, and judgment

Key Scriptures

Verses 1,12—“The Lord reigneth, Let the earth rejoice”; “And give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.” There are three Psalms (93,97,99) that open with the Lord reigning, and they also close mentioning His holiness.

Verse 2—”righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.” Literally, his justice and pronouncements are the foundation of His throne. This is not only true of the Lord God, but also of His Son, Jesus Christ. John 8:16: “And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.”
