Psalms in Poetic Form: PSALM 125

Click here to read PSALM 125 in poetic form.

Background

Psalm 125 is in the Deuteronomy Book of the Psalms (Psalms 107-150). These 44 Psalms, like the Book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, show God’s Word as the source of salvation, deliverance, and healing. This would be fully carried out in the life of the coming Messiah, the living Word, Jesus Christ. Whereas Psalm 119 showed that God would raise the Messiah from the dead to eternal life, Psalm 125 is the sixth of 15 “songs of the degrees” (Psalms 120-134) regarding God keeping Hezekiah alive (see the notes on Psalm 120 for more details).

Psalm 125, written by Hezekiah, shows God blessing and protecting the Messiah as steadfastly as Mt. Zion cannot be moved.

Structure

(God’s blessing and peace through the Messiah)

(Verses 1,2) God’s blessing on His people permanent and unmovable as Mt. Zion

(Verse 3) The righteous protected from the rod of the wicked and hands of iniquity

(Verse 4) God’s blessing to those who do go and are upright in heart

(Verse 5) Peace upon Israel for the workers of iniquity turned aside to their evil ways

Key Scriptures

Verse 4—“Do good, O Lord, unto those that be good, and to them that are upright in their hearts.” God did the utmost good through the Messiah, who always did (and still does) the will of the Father. When Jesus Christ completes all that he is called to do, he will “himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all” (I Corinthians 15:28).
