Every Day Is a Holiday!

Columbus trip 013

Originally, God set up special days to recognize His goodness to His people. Yet, God has always wanted every day to be a holy day, set apart for Him. That is where we get the modern word “holi-day,” meaning a holy day. The word “holy” in the Bible means to be set apart for another. We are set apart to love and worship our heavenly Father every day! Every day is a holiday.

The Old Testament shows that the seventh day, the Sabbath, was a special day.

Genesis 2:3:
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it [made it holy]: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Exodus 20:8,11:
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it [made it holy].

Besides the Sabbath days, God set up three special feasts during the year that were to be holy, or sanctified, days.

Deuteronomy 16:16:
Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the Lord empty.

There were also special days at the beginning of each month with the new moon.

Psalms 81:3:
Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.

Thus “holy days” were the Sabbath, the three set feasts, and the new moons.

I Chronicles 23:31:
And to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the Lord in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the Lord.

The Psalmist showed that every day is a day to rejoice in God’s goodness.

Psalms 96:2; 118:24; 145:2:
Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.
This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.

Christ is the end of the law. There are no longer any special “holy” days for the feasts, new moons, or Sabbaths.

Romans 10:4:
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

Colossians 2:15-17:
And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Let’s make every day a special, set-apart day for loving and fellowshipping with our heavenly Father and our brothers and sisters in Christ!
