When others are watching and you’re on the spot,
Where everyone’s into comparing,
Just give it your all—don’t concern with what’s not,
Do the best that you can, that takes daring!
God provides what we need, we’re complete in His Son,
So don’t be upset with what’s missing.
When you jump in and use what you’ve got, you’re the one
With believing success, not just wishing.
I remember a time with my snowshoes and pack,
At the base of a cliff, I was wondering.
While the rest of our crew stood and watched from the back,
All my thoughts were they might see me blundering.
I tried several times to climb up—didn’t do it,
Ashamed they would all see me fail,
Then I realized with God’s help there’d be nothing to it,
And with bold step, I reached and prevailed.
Now atop conquered tor, I looked back at my friends,
Who were smiling at my new location.
Then they followed my lead back to where the trail ends,
And a high time of great celebration.
I learned well that day that onlookers or not,
God will help any woman or man.
He’ll be at our side as we move to the top,
‘Cause I’m doing the best that I can.
One reply on “Do the Best that You Can”
Your narrative poem reminded me of this quote that Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs and other athletes use to motivate team members. I also use it to motivate students whom I teach, but these words can be applied in any endeavor:
Good, better, best
Never let it rest
Until your good is better
And your better is best.
I appreciate your post.
