Recently my oldest sister sent me some morning glory seeds in the mail. I opened the letter, took out the seeds and stuck them in the ground. Now I have a beautiful vine that blossoms each morning with deep violet flowers. I do need to water them occasionally, but God designed all the work to be done by the seed itself. It’s the same with the gospel. We just sow it, and God gives the increase.
God designed plants to grow from within the seeds they bear.
Genesis 1:29:
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
God designed animal life, including people, to reproduce in the same way.
Genesis 17:19:
And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
There is great joy in bearing God’s seed and seeing it blossom and grow. We can plant, water, and see the increase.
Psalms 126:6:
He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.
We speak the gospel of Jesus Christ, our only Lord whom God raised from the dead. Those who receive this precious seed in their hearts will bear good fruit.
Matthew 13:23:
But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
It is not up to us to make that seed grow.
I Corinthians 3:5-9:
Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?
I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.
For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.
Just as a farmer sows seed and receives a good reward for his labor, so we too will see God’s blessings that blossom from His seed. We do our best to plant that seed in willing hearts, and then “water” the seed with our love and prayers. We are allowed to work together with our heavenly Father on this. Jesus showed us how to do that in his earthly ministry. Now we sow the Word like he did.
II Corinthians 9:6,10:
But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
Now he that ministereth [supplies] seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness.
We are partners with God in this exciting adventure of sowing and reaping. Let’s sow bountifully and rejoice as we bring in the sheaves of God’s abundance and salvation.
