The heavens declare God’s glorious story of the Messiah and his victory over the Devil. The stars and their formations show knowledge of God’s great plan to redeem mankind.
Psalms 19:1,2:
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
Looking up at the night sky, there are 48 constellations visible to the naked eye. Some celestial displays–like Orion, Ursa Major, and the Pleiades–dramatically blaze and grip the viewers attention. Other stellar arrangements are more subtle, but all carry deep significance about what Jesus Christ would accomplish.
Let’s note some early writers on Biblical astronomy and then examine linguistic, astronomical, and historical evidence to help us understand the significance of the 48 visible constellations today.
Biblical Studies on Constellations and God’s Celestial Word
One of the first Western writers to discuss this subject was Frances Rolleston. Her linguistic and Classical Studies background helped her produce Mazzaroth—The Constellations, published in 1863. Joseph Augustus Seiss, an American Lutheran minister, was known for his work on the ancient pyramids. He first published The Gospel in the Stars in 1882.
Just 11 years later, E. W. Bullinger published The Witness of the Stars. Bullinger was a prolific Biblical writer, whose other works include Number in Scripture: Its Supernatural Design and Spiritual Significance, Figures of Speech Used in the Bible, and The Companion Bible (which includes an appendix on “The Stars Also”). There are many internet sites devoted to Bullinger and his works. The Witness of the Stars is available at no cost on-line in several readable formats on Project Gutenberg.
The Witness of the Stars provides evidence from Arabic, Egyptian, Hebrew, Latin, and other languages on the original meanings of star names. It ties in many of these meanings with concepts and Biblical prophecies concerning the promised Messiah.
Maps of God’s Celestial Word
A planisphere is a map formed by projecting a sphere onto a flat plane, as when a circular star map is projected to show the heavens at a certain time and place. As God’s Celestial Word: The Zodiac in Job 38:31–39:30 will show, ancient Egyptian artifacts from Denderah and Esneh included zodiac planispheres. The temple ceiling from Denderah (now in the Louvre Museum, Paris) uses Egyptian gods and their more familiar Graeco-Roman equivalents to depict the 48 visible constellations and others.
E. W. Bullinger has “A Planisphere of the Heavens” in the back of The Witness of the Stars. This chart beautifully shows the relationship of all 48 visible constellations in the heavens. The following is a review of some basic star names that add depth to the story of this great conflict between good and evil, between God’s selfless Messiah and his archenemy–the fallen angel “Lucifer” (Isaiah 14:12), “the great dragon…that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world (Revelation 12:9),” and our “adversary the devil” (I Peter 5:8). Much of this information can be found in Bullinger’s work, although the order below has been modified to fit with the actual locations of the twelve major signs and their related constellations.
The following gives an overview of the 48 visible constellations with illustrations from Bullinger’s planisphere.
