The second life lesson I’ve learned is instrumentally woven in with humility (Life Lesson #1)—that I must prove everything by the Word of God. The apostle Paul emphasized to the Thessalonians, “Prove all things. Hold fast to the good” (I Thessalonians 5:21). In order to prove all things by the Word, I must put in the time to understand it. If I don’t, I will end up blindly following anyone who says, “Thus saith the Lord.” Satan himself said, “Thus saith the Lord,” when he tempted Jesus (Matthew 4:6).
And if Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, it’s no surprise his ministers also pose as “ministers of righteousness” (II Corinthians 11:15). Men like Hymenaeus and Philetus twisted the Word for their own purposes. These two lived in Paul’s day, teaching that there was no need of a future resurrection. And through their ungodly words, the believers whom Paul faithfully had taught the truth had their trust in God and hope of a glorious resurrection squashed–and I’m sure these two were gaining followers and finances for their teachings, possibly even believing the lies themselves (II Timothy 2:17-19).
Paul’s time on earth was ending, and so he exhorted the up and coming Timothy to combat false prophets like these by being the kind of person God accepts. What kind of person is that? One who applies the teaching of God’s Word in the right way. One who is patient and ready to explain the reason for their hope in Jesus Christ, and one who does not entangle themselves in foolish wordy arguments, but lays down truth of scripture for all to see amidst false narratives.
Even today the lies and deceptions from false prophets grow stronger. This is why I must prove everything by the Word of God. I don’t just jump towards any emotional decision based on my feelings, or do whatever my favorite celebrity says, or follow the popular opinion of well-meaning friends. I focus on learning the truth no matter how messed up the world around me becomes.
Paul said to Timothy, “Wicked and deceitful men will go from bad to worse, deceiving others and deceiving themselves. Yet you must go on steadily in all those things that you have learned and which you know are true.” How do I know they’re true? They align with the Word of God I have studied and put in my heart, and every day I must continue maturing in them so I know what is “genuine.”
The Word of God is THE only power that can procure what is genuine. And that is why I am to test the things around me, and see if they agree with what He clarifies as “genuine” in His scriptures. If they do, then let them stay in my heart and abide there forever. Should they not, then let me distance myself from that evil no matter the form.
I also know it is impossible to be perfect and that I will at times fall into the wrong way. This is where humility comes full circle and I can change from error to truth, as I heed those who also love God and have worked His Word. But I must not take men’s word for it – let it be only by the scripture they share. Show me how the scripture fits and my heart will be satisfied as I see its good fruit spring forth in my heart and life.

Love this! Our humility expands when we read and think about God’s word. God’s love is simple and increases our capacity to love.
Great admonition and clearly laid out. Easy to be entreated.
