Background
Psalm 144 is in the Deuteronomy Book of the Psalms (Psalms 107-150). These 44 Psalms, like the Book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, show God’s Word as the source of salvation, deliverance, and healing. This would be fully carried out in the life of the coming Messiah, the living Word, Jesus Christ. Psalm 144 shows God’s great blessings upon David, and David’s son, the Messiah. Whereas the sons of Adam are vain, God brings salvation and deliverance from the “strange children” who speak vanity and do falsely.

Key Scriptures
Verse 4—“Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.” The Hebrew word translated “Man” is adam, referring to the first man. Since the beginning, any person without God is empty and vain. Life on earth is short, but it is a time to fellowship with the Creator and build a life for eternity through Jesus Christ. Loving God and believing His Word (including the living Word, Jesus Christ) is man’s whole duty in life (Ecclesiastes 12:13).
Verse 12—“That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace.” This paints a beautiful picture of children who are raised in the “nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). Young men grow strong and mighty as a tree, young woman are beautiful and orderly in their behavior and respect.
Verse 15—“Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the Lord.” God repeats that His people are blessed (“happy”) when they trust in Him.
