Psalms in Poetic Form: PSALM 145

Click here to read PSALM 145 in poetic form.

Background

Psalm 145 is in the Deuteronomy Book of the Psalms (Psalms 107-150). These 44 Psalms, like the Book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, show God’s Word as the source of salvation, deliverance, and healing. This would be fully carried out in the life of the coming Messiah, the living Word, Jesus Christ. Psalm 145 is the only Psalm with the title “David’s Psalm of Praise.” This is David’s Psalm of great praise for the Lord, Who will keep His promise and send the Messiah to rule over all. This Psalm sets the foundation for the final five Psalms and their praise to the Lord.

This Psalm is a regular acrostic, so that each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet (with the exception of nun) is set in order and begins each verse.

Structure

(Verses 1,2) I will praise and bless God my King forever

(Verses 3-7) God’s people and works shall praise Him and declare His greatness

(Verses 8,9) The Lord is gracious, full of compassion, slow to anger, great in loving kindness and mercy, good to all, compassionate to His works

(Verses 10-16) God’s people and works shall praise Him and declare His great kingdom

(Verses 17-20) The Lord is righteous, holy in all His works, near to those who truly call upon Him, saving those who respect Him, preserving those who love Him, destroying the wicked

(Verse 21) I will praise and bless the Lord forever

Key Scriptures

Verse 10—“All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord; and thy saints shall bless thee.” This is the only true response to the Lord for what He has done in the Messiah. All works will praise the Lord, God’s holy ones will bless Him for what they have in Christ.

Verse 17—“The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.” Jesus Christ is the true and living way (John 14:6) to the Father. The Messiah is the righteous one sent by a holy God to redeem mankind. The greatest work, the “work of God,” is to believe on His Son. John 6:28,29: “Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

Verse 13—“Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.” God is ruler over all for all time.  He promised that David’s heir, the Messiah, would sit upon David’s throne forever. The Prophet Nathan spoke this vision to David (II Samuel 7:16; I Chronicles 17:12); Solomon declared this promise (I Kings 2:45); and the Prophet Isaiah reminded God’s people of it (Isaiah 9:7).
