Click here to read PSALM 99 in poetic form.

Background

Psalm 99 is the tenth in the Numbers Book of the Psalms, which goes to Psalm 106. God’s rest is a major theme of these 17 Psalms, and in this specific Psalm, God gives His people a new song to sing.

Structure

(Verses 1-4) The Lord’s people and His king praise and love the Lord

(Verse 5) Exalt the Lord our God and worship, for He is holy

(Verses 6-8) The Lord’s prophets and priest call upon the Lord

(Verse 9) Exalt the Lord our God and worship, for He is holy

Key Scriptures

Verses 1,9—“The Lord reigneth, let the people tremble”; “And worship at His holy hill; For the Lord our God is holy.” There are three Psalms (93,97,99) that open with the Lord reigning, and they also close mentioning His holiness.

Verse 6—”Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the Lord, and he answered them.” Moses and Aaron were both grandsons of Levi and of the priestly tribe. Samuel called upon the Lord’s name many times, including when he asked God who should take Saul’s place as king. The Lord answered and led him to find David (I Samuel 16). Note also I Samuel 12:18: “So Samuel called unto the Lord; and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.”
