Psalms in Poetic Form: Psalm 33

Click here to read PSALM 33 in poetic form.

Background

This Psalm is a beautiful contrast between the Messiah (who is upright and reverent to God), and natural men (who follow their own devices and plans). Psalm 33 shows God’s magnificence as the Creator (verses 6,7) and His loving care for His people as their Lord (verse 12). The Lord looks from heaven and sees all things—the works of man (verses 13-17) and the deliverance of those who revere and trust Him (verses 18-22).

Structure

(Verses 1-3) the upright (Messiah) sings praises to the Lord

(Verses 4-9) the Word of the Lord to be revered

(Verse 10) the devices of man

(Verses 11,12) the Counsel of the Lord to be obeyed

(Verses 13-17) the devices of man

(Verses 18-22) the reverent (Messiah) sings praises to the Lord

Key Scriptures

Verse 4—“the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth.” Jesus Christ said that God’s Word is truth (John 17:17).

Verse 6—“By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.” The 48 visible constellations tell the story of the Messiah. God “breathed” them, just as He did the written Word (II Timothy 3:16 where “given by inspiration of God” literally means God-breathed).

Verse 11—“the thoughts of his heart to all generations.” As evidenced by His sending the Messiah to redeem mankind.

Verse 15—“He fashioneth their hearts alike.” Today, anyone can believe in their heart and be saved (Romans 10:9,10). God sent His Son so that “whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Verse 21—“we have trusted in his holy name.” We trust in God’s namesake, the Lord Jesus Christ.

I love this reminder that God’s power and love are so much greater than all the silliness of the world and man’s doing.
