Psalms in Poetic Form: Psalm 43

Light

Background

This Psalm is tied together with Psalm 42, for it has no title of its own. This unity can be seen in that a chorus occurs in the middle and end of Psalm 42 and at the end of Psalm 43. This chorus includes: “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him.”

These two Psalms open the second or “Exodus” book in the Psalms (Psalms 42-72). Like Moses and the children of Israel crying for God’s help in the wilderness, they show the Messiah’s appeal for God’s help in his “wilderness” of life.

Structure

(Verse 1) Plea for God’s help

(Verse 2) No need to go mourning

(Verse 3) Plea for God’s help

(Verse 4) Go to God’s altar with praise

(Verse 5) Chorus: Messiah praises God for His help

Key Scriptures

Verse 1—“O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me.” Jesus Christ was led by God’s light and truth. He stated that beautifully in John 3:21: “But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”
