Trail Truth 1—Preparation

Gene has embarked on a new adventure with friend, Rich–hiking the Appalachian Trail from Massachusetts to Maine. He’ll be sharing some of his learning with us each week and here is the first in the series, “Trail Truth”. –Sherry

Getting ready for anything is exciting and sometimes a lot of work. Thinking about carrying a little under 40 pounds on your back for two months is an interesting concept. Then I remember what Galatians says:

Galatians 6:2,4,5:
Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
For every man shall bear his own burden.

I’ve always wanted to be more like Jesus Christ. He was mobile, God-sufficient, and free to love and serve. That is my hope for this time on the Appalachian Trail with my friend Rich.

Even though we have tents and sleeping bags and food and water supplies, it’s still up to our heavenly Father to take care of us—like He does every other day. There is nothing new in that. I’m looking forward to bearing my burden of life yoked together with my Lord Jesus Christ.

Matthew 11:28-30:
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Life on this earth can be burdensome and heavy, and truly we cannot carry it alone. Jesus Christ gives us rest when we take his yoke upon us with his meekness and lowliness. Then we find rest in any trials or tribulations. It’s a joy to walk with him!

Thank you for your prayers. We will keep you updated in the weeks ahead. First stop will be Dalton, Massachusetts.

Love,
Gene

Ah ha! I had a feeling you were up to something way cool! Lol!
That is so awesome!!! So happy that you get that opportunity!
My niece met her now husband while hiking the Appalachian Trail. They met in one of those shelters that people share along the way.
Her husband hiked that thing twice and wrote his Doctorate thesis about life on the trail.
You’re gonna have life changing experiences.
I can’t wait to read about them.
Lots of prayers for you guys and your feet!
: )
Go Gene! Go Rich!
Whoop whoop!!!
Love that pic!!!!

Sherry, I’m diggin’ your posts everyday. ❤️

I can only imagine the things you’ll get to see.
I remember spending the night on El Capitan during L.E.A.D.. We hiked to the top one afternoon arriving at sunset. The wind picked up while we set up our tents blowing a strong 30-40 mph. Hats and clothes were flying off the mountain like leaves. The wind blew until after midnight.

But the next morning was calm and clear with a magnificent sunrise. I recall how quiet and peaceful it was. It was awesome.

I’ll be believing you get to see some great weather and sunrises. And the stars should be…well…stellar. I’ll be praying for your safety and God’s protection for you as well. God bless you.

We love this! Looking forward to hearing about the trip. Love hearing the Word you teach. ❤️ Kevin & Charlotte

Have a wonderful journey, I’ve read books about the hike. God bless you! Dean & Edna
